CHARACTERS:
Lieutenant Frank Cioffi (late 20s-40s) Local Boston detective who is also a musical theatre aficionado. Aside from being exceptionally good at his job, he has also aspired to be a musical theatre performer his entire life. Thrilled to be rubbing elbows with professionals. He falls in love with Niki. Baritone with good dancing and comic timing. Vocal range: Ab below middle C to E above treble C

Niki Harris (20s-early 30s) Pretty, naïve ingénue. Niki is a chorus girl/understudy in the chorus of the show-within-the-show during its Boston tryout. She aspires to make it as a performer on Broadway. She meets and falls in love with Dr. Frank Cioffi who is investigating a murder at the theatre. Sweet and too-good-to-be-true. Actress must have legit Soprano and good dancing. Soprano: Vocal range: Middle C to E above treble C

Georgia Hendricks (late 20s-early 40s) Female half of our songwriting team. She ends up taking on the leading lady role. As she does solos and heads up big production numbers, she must sing and dance well. Vocal range: G below middle C to E above treble C

Carmen Bernstein (45-65) Brassy Broadway producer. Aggressive, determined, and sometimes ruthless producer - reminiscent of Fran Weissler. She is a terrific comedic actress who sings well. Actress must have big alto belt...think Ethel Merman. Vocal range: Low Eb to E above treble C

Aaron Fox (30s-early 40s) The composer of the show-within-the-show. His songwriting partner, Georgia, is also his wife from whom he's separated. He's a charming ladies man. Legit Tenor, no serious dancing. Vocal range: Bb below middle C to Gb above treble C

Oscar Shapiro (45-65). The general manager. He is an agreeable if slightly gruff man. He is always looking for any angle to find money. Requires a good comic actor who sings. Vocal Range: Bb below middle C to E above treble C

Christopher Belling (40-60). Egomaniacal and temperamental English director. He loathes Jessica, and spits out witty & scathing comments at every opportunity . Very campy. Very funny. Requires a good comic lead actor. Limited singing (one song). B below middle C to E above treble C

Bambi Bernet (Early 20s-early 30s) Performer in the chorus and daughter of Carmen, the lead producer. Hungry to work her way up to leading performer, many think she was only hired because of her mother. Bambi is a good dancer/comedienne who sings well. Quirky, Adelaide-type role. Vocal range: Middle C to treble C.

Daryl Grady (30s). The Theatre critic for the local Boston newspaper, he enjoys using the power he has to make or break shows during their out of town tryouts. No singing or dancing.

Johnny Harmon (20s-40s) The Stage Manager of the show-within-the-show, Johnny is a character man who is gruff but lovable. He keeps the company in line and on their roes throughout the rehearsal process. Small amount of singing.

Sidney Bernstein (50s). The producer of an out of town flop. Sidney is tough and self-serving. Actor should have good comic timing. No singing or dancing.

Bobby Pepper (20s to early 30s) The choreographer and lead dancer. A Gene Kelly type who is the one shining star in an otherwise dire show. He is a strong singer who dances well. Vocal range: A below middle C to E above treble C

Jessica Cranshaw (30s-50s). Fading Hollywood star. A diva who has no right be, she is a terrible singer and actress who stars in the show-within-the-show and gets murdered on its opening night. Funny stuff...only in the opening number but we remember her throughout the show. Vocal range: G above middle C to D above middle C

ENSEMBLE ROLES
Randy Dexter - Vocal range: A below middle C to Eb above treble C
Harv Fremont - Vocal range: A below middle C to Eb above treble C
Mona Page, Roberta Wooster, Detective O'Farrell, Marjorie Cook, Arlene Barruca, Roy Stetson, Brick Hawvermale, Jane Setler, Connie Subbotin, Peg Prentice, Ronnie Driscoll, Russ Cochran

Five to seven men and five to seven women who play the actors under investigation for the murder(s). They all appear in the show-within-the-show which is seen ‘in performance’ and ‘rehearsal’ and during Cioffi’s ‘rewrites’. This is a group of singing, dancing, acting performers who are crucial to the production. Good movers with various ranges of voice.

Synopsis

Curtains is a musical with a book by Rupert Holmes, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander, with additional lyrics by Kander and Holmes.
Two Acts (2 hrs, 40 mins)

Based on the original book and concept by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts and follows the fallout when the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. Can a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself? (Wikipedia)
